Automations send a notification when a selected event occurs in an environment. Use them to notify your application or internal tools when integrations are connected, jobs run, tenants change, schedules are updated, and more. Each automation applies only to the environment where you create it. To configure the same behavior in staging and production, create an automation in each environment.

Prerequisites

  • Automations must be enabled for your organization.
  • You must be an Admin to create, edit, enable, disable, or delete automations. Developers can view automations and destinations.
  • You need an HTTP or HTTPS endpoint that can accept JSON POST requests.

Create an automation

  1. Open the environment where you want to receive notifications.
  2. In the environment navigation, select Automations.
  3. Select New Automation.
  4. Enter a name and choose whether the automation is enabled when you save it.
  5. Select an event.
  6. Select a destination, then select Save Changes.
The event selector shows a sample payload for the selected event. An automation uses the default payload shown there.

Configure a destination

Destinations are reusable webhook endpoints. Create one from Manage Destinations while creating an automation, or select Destinations on the Automations page.
  1. Select Add Destination.
  2. Enter a name and your Webhook URL.
  3. Optionally enter a Signing secret.
  4. Select Save Changes, then choose the destination for your automation.
Hotglue sends a JSON POST request with a Content-Type: application/json header. A response outside the 2xx range is treated as a failed delivery and is retried up to three times.
Webhook is the only destination type currently available. Slack and email destinations are not yet supported.

Verify webhook requests

When you set a signing secret, Hotglue adds an X-Hub-Signature header containing the HMAC-SHA1 signature of the raw request body. Use a timing-safe comparison to verify the request before processing it.

Manage automations and destinations

Use the toggle on an automation to enable or disable it without deleting its configuration. You can also edit or delete an automation from the Automations page. Destinations can be used by more than one automation. Before deleting a destination, remove it from every automation that references it.
